เรื่องย่อ
    "พระมหาชนก" เป็นเรื่องหนึ่งในทศชาติชาดก อันเป็นชาดก 10 ชาติสุดท้ายก่อนที่พระโพธิสัตว์จะมาประสูติเป็นเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ และตรัสรู้เป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าชาดก เรื่องนี้เป็นการบำเพ็ญความเพียรเป็นบารมี เนื้อความโดยย่อจากพระราชนิพนธ์มีดังนี้
    พระเจ้ามหาชนก กษัตริย์แห่งกรุงมิถิลา มีพระราชโอรสสองพระองค์พระนามว่า อริฏฐชนกและ โปลชนก เมื่อสวรรคตแล้ว พระอริฏชนกได้ครองราชสมบัติและทรงตั้งพระโปลชนกเป็นอุปราช  อมาตย์ผู้ใกล้ชิดได้กราบทูลใส่ร้ายว่า พระอุปราชโปลชนกคิดไม่ซื่อ พระอริฏฐชนกก็หลงเชื่อ สั่งจองจำพระโปลชนก
แต่พระโปลชนกตั้งจิตอธิษฐานและหลบหนีไปได้ ภายหลังได้รวบรวมพลมาท้ารบและเอาชนะได้ในที่สุด พระอริฏฐชนกสิ้นพระชนม์ในที่รบ    พระเทวีที่กำลังทรงครรถ์จึงปลอมตัวหนีออกนอกเมือง......
ด้วยความช่วยเหลือของท้าวสักกเทวราชจึงเสด็จหนีไปจนถึงเมืองกาลจัมปากะได้พราหมณ์ผู้หนึ่งอุปการะไว้ในฐานะน้องสาว   

     ต่อมาทรงมีพระประสูติกาล ตั้งพระนามพระโอรสตามพระอัยยิกาว่า "มหาชนก" จวบจนกระทั่งมหาชนกเติบใหญ่และได้ทราบความจริง ก็คิดจะไปค้าขายตั้งตัว แล้วจะไปเอาราชสมบัติคืน จึงนำสมบัติกึ่งหนึ่งของพระมารดาไปขาย แลกเป็นสินค้าออกเรือไปยังสุวรรณภูมิ ระหว่างทางในมหาสมุทร เรือต้องพายุล่มลง ลูกเรือตายหมดยังแต่พระมหาชนกรอดผู้เดียวทรงอดทนว่ายน้ำในมหาสมุทรด้วยความเพียร 7 วัน 7 คืนจนได้พบนางมณีเมขลา และสนทนาธรรมในเรื่องของความเพียร ในที่สุดนางมณีเมขลาได้อุ้ม
พระมหาชนกไปส่งยังมิถิลานคร...

     ฝ่ายมิถิลานคร พระโปลชนกได้สวรรคตเหลือเพียงพระราชธิดานาม"สีวลีเทวี"ก่อนสวรรคตทรงตั้งปริศนาเรื่องขุมทรัพย์ทั้งสิบหกไว้สำหรับผู้จะขึ้นครองราชย์ต่อไป แต่ไม่มีผู้ใดไขปริศนาได้    เหล่า
อมาตย์จึงได้ประชุมกันแล้วปล่อยราชรถ ราชรถก็แล่นไปยังที่มหาชนกบรรทมอยู่เหล่าอมาตย์จึงเชิญเสด็จขึ้นครองราชย์และอภิเษกกับสีวลีเทวี ทรงไขปริศนาต่างๆ ได้ และทรงครองราชสมบัติโดยธรรม

      วันหนึ่ง พระมหาชนก ทรงประทับบนคอช้างเพื่อทอดพระเนตรอุทยานใกล้ประตูอุทยานมีมะม่วง 2 ต้น ต้นหนึ่งมีผล ต้นหนึ่งไม่มีผล ผลนั้นมีรสหวานเหลือเกิน พระมหาชนกทรงเก็บมาเสวยผลหนึ่ง แล้วเสด็จเข้าอุทยาน  คนอื่นๆ ตั้งแต่พระอุปราชลงมาต่างก็แย่งเก็บผลมะม่วง จนมะม่วงต้นนั้นโค่นลง พระมหาชนกทอดพระเนตรเห็นดังนั้น ก็เกิดความสังเวชที่คนทั้งหลายหวังแต่ประโยชน์อย่างขาดปัญญารำลึกได้ว่านางมณีเมขลาเคยสั่งให้พระองค์ตั้งมหาวิทยาลัย จึงได้ปรึกษากับพราหมณ์ ในที่สุดได้ตั้งมหาวิทยาลัยปูทะเลย์ขึ้นโดยรำลึกว่าขณะที่ทรงว่ายน้ำในมหาสมุทรทั้ง7 วัน7 คืนนั้นมีปูทะเลยักษ์มาช่วยหนุนพระบาท...

The story of   MAHAJANAKA

    Mahajanaka is an ancient Bhuddist scripture depicting a practice of perseverance by a king named Mahajanaka. The original story was the last of the tenth in a series of Jataka scripture. It is a story of the last reincarnation of Bodhisattva before he was born Sithardha
who became Bhudda.

    Mahajanaka was a great king who brought prosperity and wealth to his land, a city of Mithila. One day on his trip to a park, he saw two mango trees at the entrance. One had a lot of tasty fruits, the other had none. He tasted the sweet mango before he went into the park.
When he came out, he found the tree with the tasty mangos torn down. Many of his subjects were swarming for good taste of sweet mango the poor tree could not withstand. But the one without fruit was left standing tall.

    Thus means good things are more attractive and jeopardy of frenzy crowd who often lack wisdom. In the old story, King  Mahajanaka had a feeling of consolation to consolation to the incident. He then stipulated toseek transquility in priesthood.

    In rewriting the story, His Majesty King Bhumibol  Adulyadej said it was too soon for Mahajanaka to become a priest. Mahajanaka would have gotten his Dhamma enlightment easier by continue working to complete good deeds in worldly condition.

    His Majesty King Bhumibol emphasizes in his rewriting on a land called Suvarnabhumi where he mappes out geographic  location of the city. He makes forecast on meteorogy and astrology
by presenting his own drawing of four graphic maps. There are parts  of his writing encouraging practice of perseverance in purity. It is an important merit needed for beneficiary in ordinary living. It becomes moral inheritant wellworth for younger Thai generation. All are rewritten
in easy-to-read contemporary languages, both in Thai and English.
 ข้อคิดจากหนังสือเรื่องพระมหาชนก

    "บุคคลเมื่อกระทำความเพียร แม้จะตายก็ชื่อว่า ไม่เป็นหนี้ในระหว่างหมู่ญาติ เทวดา และบิดามารดา.  อนึ่ง บุคคลเมื่อทำกิจอย่างลูกผู้ชาย ย่อมไม่เดือดร้อนในภายหลัง."

   "Any individual who practises perseverance, even in the face of death, will not be in any dept  to relatives or gods or father or mother. Furthermore, any individual who does his duty like a man,will enjoy Ultimate Peace in the future."

   "การงานอันใด ยังไม่ถึงที่สุดด้วยความพยายาม การงานอันนั้นก็ไร้ผล มีความลำบากเกิดขึ้น.การทำความพยายามในฐานะอันไม่สมควรใด จนความตายปรากฏขึ้น ความพยายามในฐานะอันไม่สมควรนั้น จะมีประโยชน์อะไร."

    "Any enterprise that is not achieved through perseverance, is fruitless; obstacles will occur. When any enterprise undertaken with such misdirected effort results in Death showing his face, what is the use of such enterprise  and misdirected effort?"

   "ดูก่อนเทวดา ผู้ใดรู้แจ้งว่าการงานที่ทำจะไม่ลุล่วงไปได้จริงๆชื่อว่า ไม่รักษาชีวิตของตนถ้าผู้นั้นละความเพียรในฐานะเช่นนั้นเสีย ก็จะพึงรู้ผลแห่งความเกียจคร้าน.  ดูก่อนเทวดา คนบางพวกในโลกนี้เห็นผลแห่งความประสงค์ของตน จึงประกอบการงานทั้งหลายการงานเหล่านั้นจะสำเร็จหรือไม่ก็ตาม. ดูก่อนเทวดาท่านก็เห็นผลแห่งกรรมประจักษ์แก่ตนแล้วมิใช่หรือ คนอื่นๆ จมในมหาสมุทรหมด เราคนเดียวยังว่ายข้ามอยู่ และได้เห็น ท่าน มาสถิตอยู่ใกล้ๆ เรา เรานั้นจักพยายามตามสติกำลัง จักทำความเพียรที่บุรุษควรทำ ไปให้ถึงฝั่งแห่งมหาสมุทร."

   "Hark, o^ Goddess! Anyone who knows for sure that his activities will not meet with success, can be deemed to be doomed; if that one desists from perseverance in that way, he will surely
receive the consequence of his indolence. Hark, o^ Goddess! Some people in this world strive  to get results for their endeavours even if they don't succeed. Hark, o^ Goddess! You do see clearly the results of actions, don't you? All the others have drowned in the ocean; we alone,
are still swimming and have seen you hovering near us. As for us, we are going to endeavour further to the utmost of our ability; we are going to strive like a man should to reach the shores of the ocean."

   "...สิ่งที่มิได้คิดไว้ จะมีก็ได้ สิ่งที่คิดไว้ จะพินาศไปก็ได้ โภคะทั้งหลายของหญิงก็ตาม ของชายก็ตาม มิได้สำเร็จด้วยเพียงคิดเท่านั้น."

   "...Things that we do not plan may well happen. Things that we do plan may well meet  with disaster. Wealth will not come to anybody by just dreaming about it."

"...คนอื่นๆ มีอุปราชเป็นต้นจนถึงคนรักษาช้างรักษาม้า รู้ว่าพระราชาเสวยผลมีรสเลิศแล้ว ก็เก็บเอาผลมากินกัน. ฝ่ายคนเหล่าอื่น ยังไม่ได้ผลนั้น ก็ทำลายกิ่งด้วยท่อนไม้ ทำเสียไม่มีใบ ต้นก็หักโค่นลง. มะม่วงอีก
ต้นหนึ่งตั้งอยู่งดงาม ดุจภูเขามีพรรณดังแก้วมณี. พระราชาเสด็จออกจากพระอุทยาน ทอดพระเนตรเห็นดังนั้นจึงตรัสถามเหล่าอมาตย์ว่า : "นี่อะไรกัน." เหล่าอำมาตย์กราบทูลว่า : "มหาชนทราบว่าพระองค์เสวยผลรสเลิศแล้วต่างก็แย่งกันกินผลมะม่วงนั้น." พระราชาตรัสถามว่า : "ใบและวรรณะของต้นนี้สิ้นไปแล้ว ใบและวรรณะของต้นนอกนี้ยังไม่สิ้นไป เพราะเหตุไร."  อมาตย์ทั้งหลายกราบทูลว่า : "ใบและวรรณะของอีกต้นหนึ่งไม่สิ้นไป เพราะไม่มีผล." พระราชาสดับดังนั้น ได้ความสังเวช. ทรงดำริว่า : "ต้นนี้มีวรรณะ
สดเขียวตั้งอยู่แล้ว เพราะไม่มีผล แต่ต้นนี้ถูกหักโค่นลงเพราะมีผล. แม้ราชสมบัตินี้ก็เช่นกับต้นไม้มีผล บรรพชาเช่นกับต้นไม้หาผลมิได้. ภัยย่อมมีแก่ผู้มีความกังวล ย่อมไม่มีแก่ผู้ไม่มีความกังวล. ก็เราจักไม่เป็นเหมือนต้นไม้มีผล จักเป็นเหมือนต้นไม้หาผลมิได้..."

"...The other, from the Viceroy to the elephant mahouts and the horse handlers, seeing that the King had already eaten the tasty fruit, all picked some and had their fill. Still others who came in later, used sticks to break down branches; the tree was denuded of leaves; the tree was uprooted.  The other mango tree still stood majestically as a mountain glistening like a gem. The King came out of the Royal Park; seeing this spectacle, he asked the courtiers: "What is all this?" The courtiers said : "The people, knowing that Your Majesty had already eaten the succulent fruit, fought among themselves to get a bite of that mango fruit." The King asked: "
The foliage and the resplendence of this tree are all gone, but the foliage and the resplendence of that yon tree are still intact. How is it so?" All the courtiers said : "The foliage and the resplendence of the other tree are not all gone because it bears no fruit." The King, on hearing thus, felt  very sad. He mused : "That tree is still beautifully green, because it has no fruit, but this tree has been cut down and uprooted because it bore fruits. This throne is like the tree with fruits. Danger lurks around the one with worries and does not menace the one without worries We will not be like the tree with fruits; we will be like the one without fruit.

"...เราแน่ใจว่าถึงกาลที่จะตั้งสถาบันแล้ว เป็นสัจจะว่าควรตั้งมานานแล้ว เหตุการณ์ในวันนี้แสดงความจำเป็น นับแต่อุปราช จนถึงคนรักษาช้างรักษาม้า และนับแต่คนรักษาม้าจนถึงอุปราช และโดยเฉพาะเหล่าอมาตย์ ล้วนจารึกในโมหภูมิทั้งนั้น พวกนี้ขาดทั้งความรู้วิชาการ ทั้งความรู้ทั่วไป คือความสำนึกธรรมดา: พวกนี้ไม่รู้แม้แต่ประโยชน์ส่วนตน พวกนี้ชอบผลมะม่วง แต่ก็ทำลายต้นมะม่วง..."

"...We are sure that time has come to establish many years ago. Today's events have shown the necessity. From the Viceroy down to the elephant mahouts and the horse handlers to the iceroy, and especially the courtiers are all ignorant. They lack not only technical knowledge but also  common knowledge, i.e. common sense : they do not even know what is good for them. They like mangoes, but they destroy  the good mango tree...."
